Situated on a south-facing section of coastline between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and is promoted as the "American Riviera" of the Central Coast.
An extremely popular tourist and resort destination, the city boasts a diverse economy that includes a larger service sector, education, technology, healthcare, agriculture, finance, and manufacturing.
Higher education also has a strong presence in the area with four notable higher education institutions including University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont University and Antioch University.
Transportation includes a local airport, Amtrak trains and highway 101 that stretches from LA to San Francisco.
